The digestive organs
The organs involved in digestion can be divided into two groups: the organs of the gastrointestinal tract and the accessory digestive organs. The first group includes the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach and the small and large intestines, while the teeth, tongue, gallbladder and certain large digestive glands (salivary glands, liver, pancreas) belong to the second group. Food passes through the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, which transforms it both mechanically and chemically by means of the enzymes secreted by the accessory digestive organs.
It is interesting to note that two of the digestive organs, the pancreas and the liver, are vital organs and if the liver is damaged, it can usually regenerate itself spontaneously.
