Explore different aspects of the diversity of outdoor gastronomy through the 'Eating outside' exhibition. On display in our Discovery Area, a selection of images by Magnum photographers showcase a range of traditions and contemporary trends.
From Switzerland to China, Mexico to Iran, discover how social class, generation and dietary habits determine what you do and don't eat outdoors. From farmers to workers, from rustic meals to community feasts, photography captures the unique atmosphere of these moments.
Eating outside is in harmony with the environment, whether urban or rural, and with cultural contexts, from the nightly pleasures of eating in the street in warm climates to religious celebrations, carnivals and sports tournaments around the world. The historical development of travel, from the first grand tours in the 18th century to the rise of tourism in the 20th century, has greatly influenced the way we eat outside and on the move. This was followed by the rise of street food in major cities, culminating in megacities where large fast-food chains also appeared, offering takeaway meals to be eaten on the street. Explore the universal story of 'Eating outside', where each photograph offers a perspective on the richness and diversity of culinary practices around the world.
