The food we eat can come from various sources.
Which food comes from plants?
Fruit and vegetables are of plant origin. We can eat fruit fresh or dried, meaning with a reduced water content.
Nuts are also considered as a kind of fruit, known as oleaginous fruit.
Vegetables are a large and very diverse food family and should not be confused with pulses, the dried seeds of leguminous plants.
Cereal products are also of plant origin. Wheat, rice and corn are all cereals grown mainly for their grains.
Some processed food is also of plant origin, such as bread and pasta, for example.
Which food is of animal origin?
Meat is of animal origin. It includes white meat, such as poultry, and red meat such as beef and lamb.
Fish is also of animal origin. There are many different kinds of fish:
-
lean fish, such as cod
-
oily fish, such as salmon
-
freshwater fish, such as carp
-
saltwater fish, such as sea bream.
Seafood is also of animal origin.
Lastly, animals produce some of our food, for example hen’s eggs and cow’s milk. Such food can be processed. Milk is a good example, as it allows us to make cheese and yoghurt.
Does food come from other sources?
Salt, for example, is of mineral origin and yeast is of fungal origin.
