During the Great Depression in the United States, from the 1930s onwards, the decreasing cost of electricity sparked the development of electrical appliances marketed to modern and wealthy urban households. These new appliances included waffle irons, such as this Art Deco model, more elegant and lighter than the cast iron versions used on wood- or coal-burning stoves.
