These sugar tongs perfectly illustrate the abundance of utensils found on bourgeoisie tables in the 19^th century. Eleven years before these tongs were made, Czech confectioner Jacob Kristof Rad produced the first sugar cubes. Until then, sugar had been sold in conical form, known as a sugar loaf.
