Super Size Me
Morgan Spurlock, US, 2004
Following the lawsuit brought against McDonald’s by two obese teenagers in the United States, a spokesperson for the fast food chain declared that the food served in their restaurants was healthy and nourishing. The documentary follows Morgan Spurlock testing the truth behind these claims by eating only McDonald’s food three times a day for one month. In addition, he forces himself to try all the dishes at least once. Moreover, if it is offered to him, he must order the ‘Super Size’ meal which contains 250 g of chips and more than a litre of fizzy drink. At the same time, he limits himself to walking 5000 steps a day, like the average American. By eating at the fast food restaurant three times a day, Morgan puts on weight very quickly and experiences chest pains. Despite the nausea, the weight gain and general discomfort, he continues with the experiment to the end. After the film’s release, the chain removed the ‘Super Size’ option from its menu. However, the documentary has not caused McDonald’s to be less successful. The selected extracts show how Morgan reacts when testing the Super Size meal for the first time.
