La Grande Bouffe
Marco Ferreri, EuropaCorp, France, Italie, 1973
This film La Grande Bouffe (The Big Feast) caused a scandal when it was released in 1973. It depicts the vices and the depravity of members of the Parisian bourgeoisie who live to eat rather than eat to live. Four friends gather in a villa in Paris for a gastronomic weekend. In reality, they are not getting together for a convivial meal, but with the intention of eating themselves to death. This highly provocative film shows a number of sumptuous and refined dishes and highlights the vulgar gluttony with which the protagonists devour them. The selected extracts illustrate some of the characters’ inappropriate behaviour as they seek to achieve their aim.
