El baño del Papa
Enrique Fernández, César Charlone, Uruguay, trigon-film, 2008
The villagers of Melo, on the Brazilian border in Uruguay, are looking forward to a visit from Pope John Paul II and his congregation, seeing it as a way to increase their meagre income. For this special event, each family is preparing a regional culinary speciality to offer to the tourists. However, contrary to the villagers’ expectations, not many tourists come and they are not keen to sample the local gastronomy. The villagers have to deal with a huge amount of wasted food. The selected extracts from the film The Pope’s Toilet show them setting up food stands, faced with uninterested tourists. We can see the villagers’ disappointment at this huge loss.
