We group different kinds of food together based on the main nutrient(s) they contain.
What does water contain?
Water is vital to your body. Some mineral waters are rich in minerals, such as calcium and magnesium.
What do fruit and vegetables contain?
Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals. They also contain dietary fibre. In general, fruit contains more carbohydrates.
What do meat, fish, eggs and tofu contain?
Food in the meat group provides your body mainly with proteins, but also with minerals and vitamins. Meat and oily fish provide some of our lipid intake.
What do dairy products contain?
Dairy products provide us mainly with minerals, such as calcium, as well as with proteins, lipids and vitamins.
What do cereals, potatoes and pulses contain?
These foodstuffs are rich in complex carbohydrates, such as starch, as well as in proteins, B group vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.
What does the sugary products group contain?
Food in the sugary products group mainly contains simple carbohydrates, such as sucrose, glucose and fructose. Some food in this group, such as chocolate and toffees, also contains lipids.
What does the fats group contain?
Food in the fats group has a high lipid content, but also contains vitamins.
