How does our sense of hearing work?
Hearing responds to
physical stimuli, which ears pick up in the form of sound waves, which are actually vibrations. The ear has 3 parts: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
The sounds around us are vibrations in the air known as external sound waves. These vibrations are perceived by the
outer ear and amplified in the
middle ear.
Ears also pick up sounds that come directly from the mouth, for example those we hear when we chew crunchy or crispy food. These are not vibrations in the air, but vibrations from our teeth and bones, transmitted directly through jawbones to the middle ear.
External and internal vibrations, amplified by the middle ear, are transmitted to the
inner ear which turns the sound waves into electrical impulses. The auditory nerve transmits these impulses to the brain.
Does hearing influence our expectations?Unlike sight, which can create expectations regarding food, hearing has very little influence on our expectations.
